Vacation with a Purpose: Retreats
For years now, I've promised myself I would go on a certain type of vacation. This trip would be in a far away country, organized by knowledgeable travel counselors, composed of total strangers and serve a bigger purpose than travel itself... A philanthropic retreat!
I'm excited to announce that in September, I'm heading to Malawi, Africa on a Safari & Charity retreat!
WHAT MAKES A RETREAT AN EPIC EXPERIENCE
A retreat is usually a planned vacation with a unique focus. Typically retreats have some aspect of educational or higher purpose, whether a yoga escape or a writers retreat or a spiritual gathering. Retreats focus their time on the specific intent of the trip while combining the best of travel, like exploring a new destination.
I've been researching impactful travel for a while, as I hoped to combine my love of philanthropy with my never-ending travel bug. Yet in the past, once I would find a trip, there was something holding me back. It was too expensive or not the right time or I didn't have enough vacation or... would it actually accomplish my intended purpose? While relaxing, does eight days of yoga in Costa Rica count as "giving back" (probably but maybe not?)?
And then one morning I woke up and YES. MAGIC! I found a retreat that combined all of my passions and I signed up right away.
WHAT'S HAPPENING ON THE MALAWI WOMEN & CHARITY RETREAT
We Are Travel Girls is my go-to travel community on social media as they empower women through travel and recently began curating retreats. I was so happy to see a trip focused around doing good and local entrepreneurship, with the added bonus of exploring Africa.
What I'll be doing on the retreat:
- Community mentoring work with local women
- Hiking a mountain
- Touring a tea estate
- River boat safari
- Land safari
- Snorkelling and hiking on a tropical island
While our itinerary looks incredible, I'm most excited about the network and friendships I'm likely to cultivate. Retreats allow us to surround ourself with like-minded people and local communities. Whether it's yoga or giving back or creativity, finding the right retreat means there is almost a guarantee your fellow travelers will share the same passions as you. I'm hopeful I'll meet like-minded, strong women and create lifelong friendships.
This particular retreat is organized through a tour company called the Responsible Safari Company, which is a family run tour operator specializing in education and philanthropic travel. I met one of the owners Kate and she felt like my soul sister (via Skype)! We were so aligned on travel, global education, giving back and traveling with intention. I'm super pumped but the trip isn't until September. Hurry up, already!
There are still spots open, so come join us (plus they have many other amazing retreats in their pipeline)! To learn more, follow the below link or check out We Are Travel Girls and the Responsible Safari Company.
I joined this trip to meet new friends, gain a network of philanthropic strong women and see the beauty of undeveloped Africa. You in?
